History of the Mother's Retreat
‘The Mother’s Retreat came about because of the inspirations of the Holy Spirit and Our Lady’s help throughout each retreat.’
Over 20 years ago two moms, who wish to remain nameless but who most know, were inspired to coordinate a retreat for other mothers, as they had attended a few retreats and were so grateful for that time to reflect on their relationship with Jesus.
Shortly after, one of the mothers went to a Mass at the Maria Stein Shrine Chapel which Fr. Amberger was presiding over. He had recently been ordained and was the Parochial Vicar at Coldwater parish. She asked him if he would be their Spiritual Director for the retreat and he whole-heartedly agreed.
They agreed from the start that Our Lady would be in charge, as she was instrumental at the Wedding feast of Cana. They also made it a priority that Mothers with babies be welcome, as no other retreat they knew of offered young mothers encouragement or practical advice in living their vocations
It was also planned that confession be a major part of the retreat during a Holy Hour, along with a Mass on Saturday.
The two mothers definitely had to trust in Our Lord for this retreat. To reserve rooms they had to pay for them. So the first year they started with 20 rooms and it grew from there. Now the entire center is reserved and booked.
Fr. Amberger was the retreat leader for 4 years in 2000, Fr. Earl Fernandez for 1 year and Fr. James Reutter for 2 years. In 2007 Brother Nathan Cromly came and was ordained a priest the next year and has been the Retreat Leader ever since.
When Fr. Bedel’s mother came to a retreat she felt called to start retreats in Cincinnati for young adults. So now Fr. Nathan leaves the Mother’s Retreat and heads down to Cincy for a young adult retreat.
